    Quick answer
A side-by-side breakdown of swing gates and sliding gates so you can choose the right driveway gate for your property, grade, and budget.

Choosing between a swing gate and a sliding gate is the single biggest design decision in any new driveway gate project. The right choice depends on your driveway grade, lot width, fence line, gate weight, and how often the gate will cycle. Pick wrong and you'll spend twice — once on the install, again on the replacement. Here's how we help Marin County homeowners decide.

    Swing Gates — The Basics

A swing gate pivots on hinges mounted to a post. Single-swing gates are one leaf; dual-swing gates have two leaves that meet in the middle. Swing gates are visually classic, mechanically simple, and often less expensive to install when conditions are right. They work best on level driveways with room for the gate to swing inward without hitting a vehicle or fence.

    Sliding Gates — The Basics

A sliding gate moves laterally along a track or on a cantilever assembly, sliding parallel to the fence line. V-track sliders ride on a steel track in the driveway; cantilever sliders float above the ground on a counterweighted frame. Sliders are the right choice for sloped driveways, narrow lots, and wide openings.

When To Choose A Swing Gate

Pick a swing gate when your driveway is roughly level, you have at least the gate's full width in clear swing space behind the gate line, and your aesthetic leans traditional. Swing gates pair beautifully with ornamental iron, stone columns, and estate-style driveways. Dual-swing gates also tend to look more residential than a slider.

When To Choose A Sliding Gate

Choose a slider when your driveway slopes — even a modest grade ruins swing gate operation — or when you don't have room behind the gate for it to swing. Sliders are also the right answer for very wide openings (over 16 feet), high-cycle gates (apartment complexes, commercial), and properties where snow, leaves, or debris would foul a swinging gate's path.

    Coastal Marin Considerations

Sausalito, Tiburon, and waterfront Mill Valley properties get salt air that punishes hardware. Sliding gates expose fewer moving parts to weather; swing gate hinges and ground-mount operators take more abuse. Either is fine with the right materials, but it changes specification.

    Hillside & Canyon Driveways

Mill Valley, Fairfax, and parts of Larkspur and San Anselmo have driveways with real grade. A swing gate on a sloped driveway will either drag the ground or sit high enough to be useless. Cantilever sliders solve this completely.

    Operator Differences

Swing gate operators include articulating arm, ground-mount, and underground designs. Sliding gate operators are typically rack-and-pinion units mounted next to the track. Sliders generally have higher cycle ratings and longer operator life under heavy use.

    Cost Comparison

Custom swing gates and sliding gates of comparable design land in similar price ranges. The real cost differences come from foundation work (track footing for sliders), grade prep, and operator selection. A simple single-swing on a flat driveway is the cheapest install; a long cantilever slider with a heavy commercial operator is the most expensive.

    Security & Privacy

Both styles can be solid-panel for full privacy or open-design for visibility. Sliders close a wide opening with one panel — no center gap — while dual-swing gates always have a meeting point that can be a visual or weather gap.

Both can last 20+ years with proper specification and maintenance. Sliders typically have higher operator cycle ratings, which matters most for high-traffic gates.
